The mystery cross-dressing gene

There is not a single shred of doubt in my mind. My family has some mystery kinky gene that causes cross- dressing.
Shocked? Its actually not that bad .Let me clarify.
Our old family albums are full of cringe-worthy pictures of me dressed as Lord Krishna (in Dhothi and all) and of my brother dressed as a girl. And one would have to squint to recognise the boy hiding behind the lipstick, frock, bhindi, bangles and fountain pony tail.
My parents wanted a daughter and a son and got one of each ‘variety’ .So why dress up their daughter like a boy and the son like a girl ?
Really beats me..
And its just not us, all my cousins have similar gender-confusion pictures in their respective family albums.
The second favorite pass-time in the family is, of course, photographing kids in their..erm.. birthday suits. How horribly embarrassing! As if they need to document the presence of the family jewels and tell the future brides that come into the family “See, all’s well !”;-)
I hope fervently that the gene decided to miss me and I don’t toture other kids this way. Time will only tell..Sigh!
You have such embarrassing pics of yourself  in your family albums? Do share your horror stories…and make me feel better 🙂

  1. Are you kidding! I have one of my younger dressed in pattu pavadai and all my jewelry. It shall be held over his head every he refuses to do something I ask of him. FB tagging is a very powerful tool. Use it ;)). These cutie pies grow up to be teenagers you know.

Best wishes :), eat well and be happy.

(for all your readers, the above statement is a spoof. Not the picture but the rest of it)

  2. Oh gosh! Poor son of yours :-)..Finding his pattu-paavadai clad photo in FB must easily be his worst nightmare. But must say is a great idea that can be used as a excellent arm-twisting strategy ..

  4. I have one as Krishna but not much else unless you count me making faces at the camera. But to compensate there are a ton of my brother's butt naked pictures which I'm going to start using as blackmail items once he finds a girlfriend 😀 *evil laugh*

  5. Haha..You are not the only one!
I think all indian parents mindset would be to take a picture of their baby on the new born birthday dress 😉
I'm the only daughter, so my mom disguised me like Lord Krishna, Bharathiyar(tamil poet), apart from Radha, Meera, Indhira Gandhi and Andal(another indian god)! Phew! A fancy dress without any competition!

  7. Vaish.. oh God !Even reading about your avatars made me feel like I was in a fancy dress pageant..I remember Indira Gandhi used to be a favorite way back.. and so was Andal. My sympathies..;-) And I wonder what the birthday suit photo connection is with Indian parents.. Some really vetti sociologist should do some research on it ..

  8. Kala..Dance shows are not bad, actually ! Not entirely like when your parents willfully subject you to fancy dress nightmare (sans the competition!).. but like you say I am sure it would have been fun way back when we posed around feeling all important and amused.. Maybe the solution to this is we shouldn't grow up and remain 5 years forever 🙂

  9. I somehow escaped this but the husband did not.Looking through family albums my mother-in-law shared, he is in multiple pictures as an infant and toddler dressed in his sister's frock, petticoat and even a pretty little bonnet in one!

  10. That's a very India phenomenon, don't worry – you're not alone.

The Lord Krishna thingy (thankfully they dressed me and not my sister) is as common as they come.

I see that happening every other generation. “Oh…so cute – what the hell, he's so small anyway, he won't remember. And those curly tresses…awww.”

And the next thing I know, I'm wearing this ghaagra choli and posing for pics happily. Grrrr.

Great blog you have here..will return for more. Keep writing! 🙂

Mmmmmmmmm regarding the post. No Krishna or Radha in my house but yes poses in various dresses for me and my younger sis. The one I cherish most is me in a marwari sari when i was in class 2.

  19. I am lucky – no birthday suit pictures and no cross dressing, all pretty dresses and pavadais and saris for me, growing up. Now my brother is another story. They wanted a grandson to carry the family name so I get the whole lets photograph him with the family jewels. He, though insisted on wearing a pavadai for my athai's wedding and we have enough pictures to embarrass him for the rest of his life. Tormenting your brother can be so much fun >:{)>
